Introduction to Young Urban Women in South Africa

In this video, the young women introduce their movement, the content and their experiences of sisterhood in South Africa.
Young women from underprivileged backgrounds have limited access and opportunities in terms of their life choices, and carry an unequal share of care responsibilities. Their inability to access sexual and reproductive health information and services often impacts on their ability to engage in livelihood opportunities such as paid employment and to have fair and just working conditions. Lack of quality services, inadequate government support, through social protection and other measures to care for children also limit young women’s ability to access and claim their rights.
Young Urban Women (YUW) is a self-advocacy initiative that provides young women with a platform to share challenges, solutions, preventative methods and a safe space to talk about issues facing young girls in contemporary South Africa. Most teenagers and young adults prefer talking to their peers about sensitive issues, and this is the value that the YUW platform at Afrika Tikkun provides. We believe that these girls are the experts in the matters that affect them and YUW serves to amplify their voices. Some of the prominent issues affecting girls and young women include femicide, rape, misogyny, and domestic violence. YUW are increasingly aware of the long-term effects of gender-based violence and are raising their voices in demand for meaningful action. Afrika Tikkun supports and promotes this activism through multiple activities.
